I went to SAMSI for a workshop, and met Sayan there. I asked him questions after his talk, yet he then asked me more questions to understand why I was asking them. This curiosity and his warmth led us to discuss until I ended up with him and a bunch of other maths faculty at dinner. I was a postdoc at the time, and felt uncertain about next steps, yet the mix of geometry, data and biology that Sayan did helped me continue on this academic research path. He was extremely patient and always generous with his time. I had many helpful conversations when I was thinking of moving to Germany. I think of him often. He has left a void in the hearts of many, personally and professionally, which is impossible to fill. We miss him.
